Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Leila Jeffreys?
Leila Jeffreys is a contemporary Australian artist known for her striking photographic portraits of birds and video artworks. She lives in Sydney and exhibits in Australia and internationally. Leila is passionate about nature, art, and conservation.
Why does Leila photograph and film birds?
Leila is inspired by birds as powerful symbols of freedom, fragility, and resilience. She uses photography and film to tell their stories and deepen our emotional connection to the natural world. Her work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and feel a sense of wonder.
Where do you find the birds?
Leila works closely with wildlife carers, bird sanctuaries, and conservationists to ethically photograph birds. Many of her subjects are rescued or part of breeding programs. Each bird is photographed with care and respect in a quiet, calm environment.
How do you get the birds to stay still?
They don’t stay still. Patience, empathy, and trust are key. Leila creates a calm setting where the birds feel safe, allowing their natural presence to emerge. It takes enormous lengths of time.
Do you donate and support bird welfare?
Yes, Leila regularly donates to wildlife organisations and works in partnership with conservation groups. Supporting bird welfare is at the heart of her practice. Leila helps in the following ways: she has placed a covenant on family owned land in Western Australia to protect it from development; she has donated numerous artworks to be sold for fundraising, she pays charities directly for their time when working with their rescued birds, and she also donates monthly to two animal specific charities.
Do you sell artworks?
Yes, Leila sells limited edition photographic and video artworks directly from her or Leila’s work is also available through selected galleries and at art fairs around the world.
Each piece is carefully printed, signed, and numbered. The artworks are limited edition and eventually sell out never to be released again.
Editions vary so please check each artwork for the particular number in that edition. If available, you can choose a particular number.
What paper and inks are used?
Leila is currently printing on Ilford Galerie Smooth Cotton Rag using Epson inks.
Do you send artworks anywhere in the world?
Leila has been shipping artworks to collectors around the world for over 15 years, through trusted fine art logistics partners.
Each piece is handled with great care to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. All artworks are insured and in the rare case of damage, Leila will ensure your artwork is re-printed and received. Leila’s galleries also have framed artworks available to view and purchase.
How are the artworks sent?
Artworks are professionally packed to protect them during transit. They are rolled and sent in strong tubes. Every shipment is insured and trackable.
Can you help with framing?
Leila can suggest some excellent framers and ways to frame but framing is
ultimately decided by the client.
Leila suggests non-reflective museum glass. As mentioned above, Leila’s galleries have framed artworks in their stock rooms.
