Filming inside Taronga Zoo’s living classroom for 'Shake The Dust Off Your Wings'. 

HERMÈS, AUSTRALIA

In 2023 Melvin J.Montalban and Leila’s artwork ’Shake The Dust Off Your Wings’ (2021) was displayed in the windows of Hermès in Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Shake was filmed inside Taronga Zoo’s Living Classroom and exhibited thanks to Samsung. The work features music by Nick Wales and cinematography by Chris Bryan. Photo by Pete Waddinton.

SAATCHI GALLERY

Moluccan and Red Tail exhibited as part of the SAATCHI GALLERY 2023 exhibition CIVILIZATION: The Way We Live Now. The exhibition was curated by William A. Ewing and Holly Russell Perret-Gentil, featuring over 350 works by 150 internationally renowned photographers. The Guardian called it ‘breathtaking’.

SUB-ANTARCTICA

Macquarie Island lies in the Sub-Antarctica and is home to large colonies of seabirds. Leila travelled there with the Australian Antarctic Division, sailing from Hobart on the RSV Nuyina, a state-of-the-art icebreaker and scientific research vessel. The expedition was part of her work on the upcoming book Seabird. She is scheduled to return for a second trip to the Antarctic continent to continue her research.

Leila was invited in 2023 by Nikon Australia to test out the brand new Nikon Z9 camera on beautiful subjects such as Yellow-tailed black cockatoo (named L.J.), Bushstone Curlew, Tawny Frogmouths, Barn Owl, Australian Kestral, Red-tailed black cockatoo. All beautifully cared for by Feathered Friends Bird Sanctuary.

FLAT // LAND Gallery, Holland

Flat Land Gallery Amsterdam presented Alpha // Female at Het Glazen Huis (The Glass House) in Amstelpark, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The show invited to viewers to reconsider traditional perspectives on animal behaviour, focussing on the concept of the ‘alpha’ in various species. September 2024.

AUSTRALIA POST 2022

Celery

On 11 July 2022, Australia Post released a stamp Issue using Leila’s artworks that celebrates a most Iconic Australian bird, the Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

PENGUIN THE MAGPIE

This series follows Penguin, a rescued magpie whose bond with the Bloom family brought unexpected joy during a time of upheaval.

As Sam Bloom recovered from a life-changing accident, Penguin became a symbol of adaptation and care—later immortalised in the film Penguin Bloom. Leila Jeffreys captured Penguin not just as a bird, but as a companion in healing, resilience, and the quiet connections we share with other beings.

ART OF MUSIC

Presented by Jenny Morris, ART OF MUSIC combines both visual arts and music. Held every two years, a group of Australia’s top artists come together to create an original exhibition where each artist chooses an iconic Australian/NZ song to inspire a piece of artwork. The artwork is then auctioned to raise funds for Music Therapy during a gala dinner in the spectacular Grand Court of the Art Gallery of NSW. Leila has donated three different one off artworks to this fundraising event.

Leila was featured in a documentary by Poppy Stockell on the ABC. Called Bird Nerd: The Art of Leila Jeffreys. 2019.

TEMPLE, NFSA

Temple was exhibited at the National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra in 2024. An immersive and reflective audiovisual installation celebrating Australia’s native bird the cockatoo.
