ARTISTS STATEMENT
First exhibited at the Olsen Gallery, Sydney . Australia is home to 14 of the world’s 21 cockatoo species. Over two years of travelling and photographing across the country...working with rescue centres, conservation programs and breeding facilities, this series took shape.
The portraits focus on expression, shifting focus from the collective flock to the singular individual.Cockatoos live within intricate social systems, forming enduring bonds, hierarchies and communities. Their behaviours, from care of each other to moments of play and grief, they mirror our own.
In isolating individual birds through portraiture, the series draws attention to their singular presence and asks us to consider not only the species as a whole but the individuality of each life within it.
